Because we’ve got this energetic guy running around we needed to fence in our backyard. However, our backyard is gigantic so we knew this was going to be a major expense for us. We chose to get a fence in the backyard for the dog but also for the garden and possible chickens. There are a lot of deer and predators around here and while we’re aware that the fence won’t keep everything out, we’re hoping it deters some.
There will eventually be 2-3 fences in our yard. This one goes around the property line in the back of the house. We’re planning on putting another one like this (or this, or this) around the garden. Then if we get chickens there will be an additional fence around the chicken coop. Hopefully that will do, if not, I give up.
For the perimeter fence, for economical and aesthetic reasons, we chose to use a privacy fence along the road facing side but went with black chain-link around the back and sides of the property. The black chain link doesn’t cover up the beautiful woods behind our house and blends in nicely (see above), meanwhile the privacy fence gives us, well, privacy.
We’re pretty happy with our choices and are planning to build the garden fence ourselves with wood and hard-wire cloth.
